Baptism

Did you know? -

Baptism started with John, a cousin of Jesus. John baptised people, and so he was known as John the Baptist.
John preached about God, and told people that they should live their lives according to God. Those that didn't, and had erred in their lives, were deemed sinners.

By being immersed in the waters of the River Jordan is how people showed their willingness to cleanse their bad ways.

Today, water baptism is most readily identified with christianity, where it symbolizes the cleansing (remission) of sins, and the union of the believer with Christ in His death, burial and resurrection so that he becomes one of Christ's faithful.

Forms of Baptism

Aspersion - sprinkling water over the head,
Affusion - pouring water over the head, or
Immersion - lowering the entire body into a pool of water.

So what is Baptism?

Baptism is an acceptance of someone repenting their sins and accept that this is only possible with the help of God and the Holy Spirit

Baptism is the sign that someone belongs to Christ. That is why baptism is sometimes known as a Christening.

Among Christians, some think that it is right to baptise children of Christian parents, but others think that this is incorrect and can only be performed when the person is old enough to understand its meaning

In the Anglican Church, babies, children and adults can be baptised. Although a baby cannot decide to follow Christ for themselves, in the Anglican Church a baptism shows that the child is included as a member of the church family.

Parents who would rather that their child was not baptised until old enough to choose to follow Jesus for themselves can There is a 'Service of Thanksgiving for the Birth of a Child', instead of a baptism for parents wishing to wait until their child is old enough to make their decision

Although the largest percentage of Baptisms in our Church are still infant Baptisms, adults can be baptised if they were not baptised as a child.
