Easter

Maundy-Thursday, the Thursday before Good Friday, was a day when upper class people used to wash the feet of a number of poor people, and on which Royal alms are distributed to the poor.

Today, the Pope washes the feet of 12 priests and the Queen distributes Maundy money to two people, a man and a woman. This is carried out after she has attended a service at a cathedral and the amount of money is based on her age.

It is also said that Jesus washed his disciples' feet on this day.

It seems we have to thank the Romans for Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns!

They exchanged eggs in springtime and the egg was symbolic of new life.

Egg rolling is still practiced today in certain parts of the country.

The Hot cross bun is supposed to have started life as an offering to the God Zeus and the cross on the top represented the horns of a sacred ox. The Roman word for this ox was 'Boun'.

Using the cross design, It was then used by Christians to symbolise the cross that Jesus was crucified on.

The Hot cross bun was also used to ward off evil spirits.
